Last night it was all about Motown...tonight it's about the results of the nationwide vote that took place after the Idol put their unique spin on hits from Barry Gordy's gang.
So which Idol's dreams will be driven out of Hollywood? Who isn't going to be part of the Idol Summer Tour--the prize afforded those who make the Idol Top 10. Would your favorite make the cut? Did you do your part after a stellar night of performances? So many questions...read on to find out what happened while you were doing something else.
Before any voting results were read, Marc Anthony (aka Mr. J-Lo) was shown helping the Idols with their In Ears--those crazy looking things that singing sensations use to keep pitch when performing live.
Then it was time for the group sing; and this year, the talented group of Idols have really done a great job--in spite of my past dislike for this Elimination Night ritual. Tonight's Motown themed sing-a-long started out with a snappy version of "Ain't No Mountain" by Diana Ross and the Supremes. Besides sounding good, some of these Idols can move a bit--especially Rocker James who looks like he could give Eddie Ruffin, the Pips, and every other Motown backup singer a run for their money with his fancy footwork.
And while I am praising the Idols out comes Little Stevie Wonder leading the Idols in a group sing of "Signed, Sealed, Delivered". Another smashing performance! These Idols are en fuego!
When he was finished singing with the Idols, Stevie called out Steven Tyler and then sang a rousing rendition of "Happy Birthday" the likes of which you haven't heard before. It was quite a sight watching Steven receive a 1960's inspired portrait accompanied by a birthday cake both of which were presented by the Idols.
It's starting out as a pretty good night...but Ryan keeps promising "surprising results" every time he teases the upcoming results. Do you think your favorite is on the wrong end of the vote totals? I'm sure there are some butterflies in some of the Idol stomachs.
And just like that we are into the results...first up, Lauren, Pia, and Scotty. Lauren looks nervous as does Scotty, but Pia seems fairly comfortable...as well they all should because they were all told they are going on tour this summer! Whew! I'm sure they are all very relieved...as am I because I was a little nervous thinking Pia might be in trouble with all of the "surpring results" talk from Ryan.
With the rest of the Idols waiting to learn if they are going to be invited to join the Idol tour bus, Ryan introduced Idol stage virgins, Sugarland, who performed their poppy little hit "Stuck Like Glue". Jennifer Nettles and Christian Bush (aka Sugarland) are so good it is easy to forgive Jennifer for her rather strange outfit which reminds me of an outfit fashioned by my friend, Chief, back in the day at Charles Culler Junior High...one question, Chief: "Are you a Cougar or are your a Puddy Cat?!"
Back from a look at the Idols wrestling at the Idol Mansion, Ryan had James and Paul come to center stage. He ran through last night's judge's comments and then told them that they were not safe tonight...and then he repeated it with emphasis: "Really, you're not safe tonight!"...then the doors at the back of the stage opened revealing Hulk Hogan who delivered the news that both James and Paul WERE in fact safe and going on tour...followed by an elbow to Ryan's melon propelling the Lilliputian like host into the front row.
Next up, Jacob, Thia, and Stefano. With half the tour roster complete and no one in the B3, these Idols must be a little nervous. Jacob was the first of the group to learn that he is SAFE! Six in the bus and Ryan turned his attention to the other two...who were told that they were both in the B3.
As he invited Naima, Jacob, and Hailey to the stage, Ryan encouraged everyone watching to stick around the very end of the show...something is definitely up tonight! Someone special is in danger. Before filling out the B3, Ryan sent Naima back to the couch (and the tour) leaving Hailey and Casey to wonder if their Idol dreams are over. If you recall, Hailey has spent a number of weeks in the B3 and Casey has never been there...I'm sure you can guess which one is going on tour and who is going to take the final stool, right!? Well, if you guess that Casey was going to the...STOOLS! then give yourself a pat on the back because that's EXACTLY where he is going.
The room was filled with oohs and aahs as Casey made his way to join Thia and Stefano. And while we await the announcement of who has one last chance to stay in the running for the Idol crown--provided the judges use their judge's save, we were entertained by the multi talented and former Idol finalist, Jennifer Hudson.
But enough about former Idols, it's time to find out who didn't pull enough votes to join the other 9 Idols on the tour. To ease the tension for one of the Idols sitting on the B3 stools, Ryan walked over and told Thia she's safe...leaving Casey and Stefano to wait through another agonizing commercial break.
Now remember, Stefano made it to this point as a judge's wild card...if he is the one chosen to go home would the judges save him? Well, we won't need to find out because it is the other judge's favorite, Casey, who is in deep danger. He has one more chance to win over the judges and he chose "I Don't Need No Doctor" to sing for the judges...but before he got to the first chorus, Randy stopped him and conferred with his fellow judges saying "We know you, Casey"...followed by Steven saying "America got this wrong".
Casey was visibly shaken and Ryan was forced to keep him upright. When he was able to gather himself and stand using his own steam, he ran to the judges, thanked them, and found his parents in the audience who gave him welcoming hugs after which a very relieved Casey listened to J-Lo who urged him to get back to the musician he is...then my DVR stopped and I hit POST!
Tune in next week when eleven Idols will sing with the knowledge that TWO are going home...thems are the rules when the judges use their save!
Until then, I will continue watching TV so you don't have to...
