Idol Chatter - The Idol Magic Carpet Hits a Snag for Two

When the judges used their judge's save last week to keep early round fan and judge favorite, Casey, in the contest, they doubled the fun or fear for the Idols tonight. When the elimination show started there were 11 Idols trying to become Idol's 10th champion, but by the end of the show there will only be nine Idols with a chance at immortality.

The customary run down on these elimination nights follows pretty much the same script each week: there is the usual lame banter between Ryan and the judges, the introduction of the remaining Idols, a group sing, the Ford commercial, and a few guest performers (tonight Idol Season 3 winner, Fantasia, sang as did Jamie Foxx with will.i.am). But that isn't what you tuned in for; what you want to know is who is going home and who is still vying for your votes come next Wednesday.

I aim to answer those questions, but first I must give you a play-by-play of the night's festivities.

To begin the fun, Ryan let us know that tonight the Idol producers are going to mix things up a bit--meaning the remaining Idols are going to be arranged in clever little groups and asked to sing together as duos, trios, and quads.

Up first were the Country-duo of Lauren and Scotty who performed "I Told You So" and did a mighty fine job if I do say so myself. When they finished their song, Ryan invited them to center stage and started the results portion of the show. So with lights dimmed, Ryan did his thing and reminded everyone of last night's songs, comments, etc. And then he sent both of the Southern youngsters to safety.

The next group of Idols was the duo of Naima and Jacob who sang the Ashford and Simpson classic "Solid"...which was Solid as a Rock! Not only did they sing the song with just the right amount of Soul, Rhythm & Blues, they added some nifty choreography that really made the performance pop! Moments after their entertaining duet, Ryan gathered them under the dimmed lights and sent Naima to the B3 and Jacob back to the couches for another week of guaranteed singing.

So with the count, three safe and one in danger, the remaining seven Idols sat idly by while Fantasia, the one-named Idol winner from oh-so-many years ago, sang a song about cornbread in a red dress cut way up to there!

After Ryan ushered Fantasia off the stage, he asked Hailey, Thia, and Pia to perform "Teenage Dream" by Katy Perry which may be the only way we are going to hear Pia sing an up-tempo song. The girls did a nice job with the song, but at times it sounded like they were fighting for supremacy of the mic and verging on shouting. But that matters little as Ryan runs down the judges comments from 24 hours ago. He then sent Pia and Hailey to the couches and Thia to the stools of danger to join Naima.

With only four Idols remaining on the couch and still unaware of what their fate for the night is, we watched some backstage video from last week. The content of said video included the Idols recording their songs for iTunes download, the Idols being whisked away on a private jet to the desert for a charity event complete with chance run-ins with Reba McIntyre, Kelly Clarkson, and Muhammad Ali. When they returned to LA, the Idols found that all the rain from the past week had taken its toll on their mansion and they were forced to pack their bags and find alternative housing. When the sun broke through the clouds, the Idols were treated to a make over followed by Tuesday rehearsal and a visit from Marc Anthony.

The final group made up of the four boy Idols--James, Paul, Casey, and Stefano took to the stage to round out the Idol performances for the evening. The fab four sang the Paul McCartney and Wings hit "Band on the Run" and each played instruments to add a bit of difficulty to the mix. Ryan then told Casey, James, and Stefano they were all safe; which means Paul was the third member of tonight's B3.

With two thirds of the B3 going home tonight, it was time for the final guest performers to take the stage and make the night just that much more excruciating for our Idols. I didn't take time to listen to the Jamie Fox/will.i.am song, but I'm pretty sure it was from their animated feature film, "Rio", which looks like a nice little family show if you're into things like that.

Ryan gathered the B3 and dropped the bomb that Paul was safe which means that it's bye-bye time for Naima and Thia. As the girls watched their journey on Idol unfold on the video screen, there were tears, laughter, and good memories for a couple of very talented performers who happened to be on Idol with one of the best casts in Idol history.

Tune in next week when the remaining nine Idols sing for your votes and the opportunity to move another giant step closer to their dream of being a big time recording artist.

Until then, I will continue watching TV so you don't have to...

Idol Worship - Singing the Songs of Reginald Dwight

Tonight the remaining 11 Idols are set to sing songs made famous by a little known pop star called Reginald Dwight...oh, you probably know him better as Elton John! Elton has been one of the great musical artists for several decades and tonight the Idols have his catalogue from which to select songs to sing for your votes. And as you cast your votes for your favorites, remember that since the judges used their one and only save to keep Casey in the contest last week, two of the 11 Idols will be sent packing during tomorrow night's elimination show.

So with the pressure at an all-time high, the Idols steadied and readied themselves to put their best foot...or voice forward!

Scotty led off tonight and selected Elton's "Country Comfort" because it had the word "country" in it...isn't that like picking a horse because you like the color purple? Whatever his reason, Scotty strapped on his guitar and hit the Idol stage to give his interpretation of the one and only country song in Elton's catalogue. At one point in the song, Scotty gave a shout out to his grandma who happened to be in the audience enjoying the live performance. Scotty sounded good, but I'm not sure it was his best. Steven kicked off the judging and told him that "nothing you do that a pair of high-heeled boots can't fix"...what?! J-Lo and Randy were all about Scotty complimenting him on staying true to himself.

Hoping that singing "I'm Still Standing" with a Reggae feel will help garner her enough votes to stay in the contest another week, Naima made her way to the stage dressed in a white haltered jumpsuit with Jamaican color highlights. J-Lo started the judging and pointed out that singing the song as a Reggae song may not have worked; Randy went so far as to call it "corny"...and while he was giving her more critique, J-Lo chimed in and defended Naima which made absolutely no sense. I didn't care for the song regardless of what the judges thought...what do you think about that!

Paul selected "Rocket Man" for his performance. Before hitting the stage, Paul said that his band played the song once and it was a disaster; hope he does better tonight. After offering his customary "how y'all doing" greeting, Paul, dressed in a Conway Twitty white jacket with rose applique and strumming his guitar lent his unique sound to one of Elton's best known and loved songs. Keeping in mind that Paul is only the third Idol performer of the night, I thought he was the best so far. Randy pulled out the "pitchy" comment, but wondered if maybe Paul isn't holding something back. Steven asked Paul if he watered his suit because "it looks like there are a few more flowers"...then said he liked the performance, calling it "my cup of tea".

Known for the power ballad--and begged by the judges to go up tempo just once, Pia went back to her comfort zone and selected "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me". Before hitting the stage Pia promised to sing a song that will get everyone moving next week if America votes her into the next round. And with that, the stage door opened revealing a fashionable Pia dressed in a sparkly mini dress and what appeared to be 6" heels. OK, Pia just knocked Paul off the "my favorite of the night" performance. She killed it...and "it" was a BALLAD! Take that Randy! Steven said he knows when he loves a song because it "makes me cry inside" and apparently he's weeping. J-Lo loved the singing, but is pushing Pia to work on her performance. Randy said she "slayed" it...just like she does every time out, but implored her to switch it up once in a while.

Fresh from a visit to the B3, Stefano went with Elton's "Tiny Dancer" in an effort to keep from being one of the two Idol booted from the competition tomorrow. I haven't been a fan of Stefano's so far this season, but in the early part of his performance, I'm liking his interpretation. He's even keeping his eyes open...oops! spoke too soon; he grabbed the mic from the stand, walked around the stage, and started closing his eyes David Archuletta-style. But he's finishing strong with a walk to the judge's table where he extended his hand to J-Lo and sang the final lyrics "tiny dancer in my hand"...causing Randy to laugh and Steven to stare straight ahead. As expected, J-Lo slobbered all over her boy-toy and while Randy was sharing his thoughts, Steven looked like he was sleeping with the television on.

Georgia peach, Lauren, was up next and she picked "Candle in the Wind" as her vote getter. Joined on stage with a red grand piano, Lauren gave the song a country feel which worked nicely. When the song was over and the crowd finished cheering, Randy complimented Elton on one of the greatest songs written and Lauren on her best performance to date. Steven reminded everyone that he has been a fan "since the first time she laid eyes on him".

So what would Rocker James do with his Elton John song? We start with his song choice which was "Saturday Night's Alight" and then we move to the choreography; which for James means he is going to start in the song standing in the audience behind the Idol stairs. As he made his way down the stairs, he continued on to the judges table, the audience, and the to the guitar player on stage with him before settling on center stage just lone enough to catch his breath before moving to the red grand piano where he set it on fire and then worshipped it from his knees while still belting out his song. I thought his voice cracked a few times, but overall it was very entertaining and he grabbed everyone watching. The judges loved it and complimented him on enjoying himself.

With the image of James dancing around the stage still fresh in our minds, we turned our attention to Thia who chose "Daniel"--a very moving song with a lot of emotion packed into it. With the fog machine working nicely and dressed like an angel, Thia sang the song as a tribute to her brother who she called her best friend. It was a nice performance and the judges seemed to like it as well. J-Lo called it beautiful and Steven said she sang a great Elton John song well.

Coming off of his near elimination, Casey chose "Your Song" to try to win back the voters. To prepare for his performance, Casey visited the barbershop where he got a trim and a haircut. Looking a bit more refined, but still sounding like Casey was seated on a stool next to the grand piano and sang from his heart. It was a very un-Casey like performance; meaning he wasn't as animated as we have grown accustomed to seeing/hearing, but it was still a very strong performance and one that proves the judges made a good choice in saving him last week. But will the voters like it? We'll have to wait until tomorrow to find out. Until the, let's hear from the judges. Randy first complimented himself and the other judges for a good save and then said tonight's performance was tender. Steven called him a "true artist".

Jacob was next and chose "Sorry Is the Hardest Word" one of Elton's big hits, but a song that Jacob said he first heard performed by Mary J. Blige...and lo and behold who should wonder into his prep session with the song producers? If you guess Mary, well, you'd be correct. The one thing the producers cautioned Jacob against is getting too emotional with the song...that's like asking a tiger to not eat their young! You can ask, but it's gonna happen! And when Jacob ended his song with a gigantic note, he was emotionally spent with tears on the edge of his eyes. The judges loved the performance; Randy asked him to go for that one spot in the song to give it the "Jacob Spot".

Hailey rounded out the show with "Bennie and the Jets". Listening to Hailey work with Jimmy and the other producers, she was already adding her signature growl to the song with portends for a great performance. And right on key we move to the stage where we found Hailey laid out on top of the grand piano which is getting quite the workout tonight. Oh no, just as she is hitting the chorus, she's off the piano and incorporating some ill-timed dance moves that are not show-closing worthy; thank goodness her smokey voice is helping take my mind off of her awkward moves. J-Lo seemed to really enjoy it...including the moves! I guess I'll have to give it to the former Fly Girl who knows a little more about dancing that I do in spite of my love of most Dance shows. Randy called it the performance of the night and Steven said Hailey sang "sexy"!

For the second week in a row we have 11 performances from which to chose our favorites and cast votes accordingly. Who are you going to vote for? I can tell you who wouldn't get my vote if I voted: Naima, Lauren, and Scotty. If those are the B3 come tomorrow night, I'm going with Naima as one of the Idols who is going home and she will be joined by Lauren.

Tune in tomorrow to watch as two Idols find out that their Idol journey is over. Until then, I will continue watching TV so you don't have to...

Idol Chatter - Someone's Gotta Go...Was it Your Favorite?

Last night it was all about Motown...tonight it's about the results of the nationwide vote that took place after the Idol put their unique spin on hits from Barry Gordy's gang.

So which Idol's dreams will be driven out of Hollywood? Who isn't going to be part of the Idol Summer Tour--the prize afforded those who make the Idol Top 10. Would your favorite make the cut? Did you do your part after a stellar night of performances? So many questions...read on to find out what happened while you were doing something else.

Before any voting results were read, Marc Anthony (aka Mr. J-Lo) was shown helping the Idols with their In Ears--those crazy looking things that singing sensations use to keep pitch when performing live.

Then it was time for the group sing; and this year, the talented group of Idols have really done a great job--in spite of my past dislike for this Elimination Night ritual. Tonight's Motown themed sing-a-long started out with a snappy version of "Ain't No Mountain" by Diana Ross and the Supremes. Besides sounding good, some of these Idols can move a bit--especially Rocker James who looks like he could give Eddie Ruffin, the Pips, and every other Motown backup singer a run for their money with his fancy footwork.

And while I am praising the Idols out comes Little Stevie Wonder leading the Idols in a group sing of "Signed, Sealed, Delivered". Another smashing performance! These Idols are en fuego!

When he was finished singing with the Idols, Stevie called out Steven Tyler and then sang a rousing rendition of "Happy Birthday" the likes of which you haven't heard before. It was quite a sight watching Steven receive a 1960's inspired portrait accompanied by a birthday cake both of which were presented by the Idols.

It's starting out as a pretty good night...but Ryan keeps promising "surprising results" every time he teases the upcoming results. Do you think your favorite is on the wrong end of the vote totals? I'm sure there are some butterflies in some of the Idol stomachs.

And just like that we are into the results...first up, Lauren, Pia, and Scotty. Lauren looks nervous as does Scotty, but Pia seems fairly comfortable...as well they all should because they were all told they are going on tour this summer! Whew! I'm sure they are all very relieved...as am I because I was a little nervous thinking Pia might be in trouble with all of the "surpring results" talk from Ryan.

With the rest of the Idols waiting to learn if they are going to be invited to join the Idol tour bus, Ryan introduced Idol stage virgins, Sugarland, who performed their poppy little hit "Stuck Like Glue". Jennifer Nettles and Christian Bush (aka Sugarland) are so good it is easy to forgive Jennifer for her rather strange outfit which reminds me of an outfit fashioned by my friend, Chief, back in the day at Charles Culler Junior High...one question, Chief: "Are you a Cougar or are your a Puddy Cat?!"

Back from a look at the Idols wrestling at the Idol Mansion, Ryan had James and Paul come to center stage. He ran through last night's judge's comments and then told them that they were not safe tonight...and then he repeated it with emphasis: "Really, you're not safe tonight!"...then the doors at the back of the stage opened revealing Hulk Hogan who delivered the news that both James and Paul WERE in fact safe and going on tour...followed by an elbow to Ryan's melon propelling the Lilliputian like host into the front row.

Next up, Jacob, Thia, and Stefano. With half the tour roster complete and no one in the B3, these Idols must be a little nervous. Jacob was the first of the group to learn that he is SAFE! Six in the bus and Ryan turned his attention to the other two...who were told that they were both in the B3.

As he invited Naima, Jacob, and Hailey to the stage, Ryan encouraged everyone watching to stick around the very end of the show...something is definitely up tonight! Someone special is in danger. Before filling out the B3, Ryan sent Naima back to the couch (and the tour) leaving Hailey and Casey to wonder if their Idol dreams are over. If you recall, Hailey has spent a number of weeks in the B3 and Casey has never been there...I'm sure you can guess which one is going on tour and who is going to take the final stool, right!? Well, if you guess that Casey was going to the...STOOLS! then give yourself a pat on the back because that's EXACTLY where he is going.

The room was filled with oohs and aahs as Casey made his way to join Thia and Stefano. And while we await the announcement of who has one last chance to stay in the running for the Idol crown--provided the judges use their judge's save, we were entertained by the multi talented and former Idol finalist, Jennifer Hudson.

But enough about former Idols, it's time to find out who didn't pull enough votes to join the other 9 Idols on the tour. To ease the tension for one of the Idols sitting on the B3 stools, Ryan walked over and told Thia she's safe...leaving Casey and Stefano to wait through another agonizing commercial break.

Now remember, Stefano made it to this point as a judge's wild card...if he is the one chosen to go home would the judges save him? Well, we won't need to find out because it is the other judge's favorite, Casey, who is in deep danger. He has one more chance to win over the judges and he chose "I Don't Need No Doctor" to sing for the judges...but before he got to the first chorus, Randy stopped him and conferred with his fellow judges saying "We know you, Casey"...followed by Steven saying "America got this wrong".

Casey was visibly shaken and Ryan was forced to keep him upright. When he was able to gather himself and stand using his own steam, he ran to the judges, thanked them, and found his parents in the audience who gave him welcoming hugs after which a very relieved Casey listened to J-Lo who urged him to get back to the musician he is...then my DVR stopped and I hit POST!

Tune in next week when eleven Idols will sing with the knowledge that TWO are going home...thems are the rules when the judges use their save!

Until then, I will continue watching TV so you don't have to...

Idol Worship - The Top 11 Hit Hitsville, USA

Tonight the Idols took on the songs that made Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, and so many other singing superstars in the 60's, 70's, and beyond. This week's musical selections will be from the Motown catalogue. How will this group of Idol wannabes do with songs that were already classics before they were born? We'll just have to see...read on and find out what I saw and heard.

After an extended period of banter between Ryan and the judges, it was time for the first Idol to hit the stage and put their special spin on a hit from yesteryear.

Batting lead off tonight was one of the early favorites this season, Casey Abrams, who chose Marvin Gaye's "Heard it Through the Grapevine". A week after taking a chance by singing the first Nirvana song on the Idol stage, Casey hit the stage in a Motown-inspired pinstripe suit and red shirt and backing vocalists on on stage with him. As he made his way around the judges table and into the audience to make time with some of his fans, we spotted a trio of violin players who added another dimension to Casey's strong vocals. With the crowd buzzing from a great performance, the judges dropped their words of wisdom on Casey. Across the board they loved him and credited him with always making the song a "Casey" song.

With one great performance in the can, it was time to see what 16-year-old, Thia Megia, can do with "Heatwave" by Martha and the Vandellas. This song selection is a huge departure for the ballad specialist, but how would that selection translate when she took the mic in hand? Looking very young (appropriately so) in a pink and black dress and with a smile on her face, Thia started strong. It appeared that she lost her place at one point in the song, but it was a much improved performance over the past several weeks. Everyone knows she can sing, but now she's beginning to look like someone who can entertain as much as hit the notes. The judges gave her props and you could tell she enjoyed this week's comments.

Jacob was next and chose another Marvin Gaye song, "You're All I Need To Get By"...which was actually a duet between Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terrell. But with the way Jacob brings it, I have confidence that he'll make up for the lack of duet partner. In typical Jacob fashion, Jacob called on his Gospel-inspired vocals and gave the song even more soul than the original...which is pretty difficult to do since Marvin and Tammy were such a killer combo. When Jacob let loose with the final note of the song, he was joined on stage by judge Steven Tyler and a standing ovation from the studio audience AND the judges! Randy called it his second great moment. It was truly the performance of the young season and should propel him into the Idol Top 10 and the Idol tour this summer. The love fest continued with hugs for Jacob's grandma followed by the entire front row of girls who were thrilled to put their arms around a legend in the making.

With the unenviable job of following Jacob was southern girl, Lauren, who went with Diana Ross and the Supreme's "You Keep Me Hangin' On". Bathed in an overhead spotlight and a floor length zebra print dress, Lauren began the song slowly, but soon got her thing going and made a walk around the judges and threw in a bit of attitude inspired by the lyrics of the song. It wasn't the strongest performance of the night, but the judges still gave her positive feedback.

J-Lo's boy-toy, Stefano, decided to slow things down a bit and went with Lionel Richie's 1984 hit, "Hello"...a song that was covered in a very unique and unforgettable manner by Season 7 Idol, David Cook. How would Stefano do in Season 10? From the start it was obvious this wasn't going to make anyone forget David Cook or Lionel Richie...especially when Stefano closed his eyes and started singing for himself and cut his phrasing...oops! I guess I'm nit-picking a bit, but that's just me. J-Lo started the judging comments by praising Stefano's singing ability, but pointed out that he isn't connecting with the crowd. Randy piled on agreeing with J-Lo and then Steven chipped in...but before he could say much, J-Lo professed her love for him. I believe J-Lo is turning into the new Paula--remember several seasons ago when Paula fell for a certain Idol named Constantine?

In an effort to stay out of the B3, Hailey selected the Smokey Robinson and the Miracles hit, "You Really Got a Hold On Me". When the song started, Hailey was on the Idol stairs and awkwardly made her want down them in what appeared to be five-inch heels. Once she hit the main stage (get it?!), she infused her unique smokey, bluesy, yodely sound and made something good happen. I don't know if she is going to win the votes necessary to keep her safe tomorrow night, but she did receive a nice compliment from Steven when he said she "didn't look a day over fabulous". The other judges were equal in their praise and I'm sure Hailey will sleep well tonight.

Country boy, Scotty, was next and for the first time this season was going to sing a genre other than Country. For his song choice he went with Stevie Wonder's "For Once in my Life". From the first note of the song, it sounded like we were listening to a young Glen Campbell--the "Wichita Linesman/Galveston" version before he went all "Rhinestone Cowboy". OMG! The first words out of Steven's mouth were about Glen Campbell--I'm wondering if these guys are reading my blog while they are supposed to be listening to the Idols sing their hearts out for your votes. The judges gave him OK reviews for his singing, but big props for being a lady killer.

Pia selected the second Stevie Wonder song in a row when she chose "All in Love is Fair". I was hoping the lovely songstress would have gone a bit more up tempo, but when you sing as well as Pia, I guess you do what you want to do on the Idol stage, because at this point everyone else is singing for second place. It would be nice, though, to see her take the mic out of the stand, move around the stage a bit, and connect more with the audience. Jennifer went through the same check list with Pia that she did with Stefano--voice, look, sound, etc. and then she stole my blog ideas and told her she needs to move more and engage the audience. Steven, again reading from my blog, said she is the closest Idol to the crown and if she needs to stomp around to get the other judges believing the same, he is confident she will do so.

For the first time, Paul broke out the guitar and sang "Tracks of My Tears" by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. The biggest question on every one's mind, no doubt, is how is Paul going to incorporate his patented moves while strumming his 6-string? Well, never fear Idol fans, Paul moved just fine, he just did it all within a few feet of his mic stand. It was a typically fine performance by the Quirky one; I don't know if he is going to knock Casey, Jacob, or Pia off the block, but his unique sound brings something special to the competition. Again the judges picked up on my comments and gave him good feedback on his sound and his performance. J-Lo even called him the "complete package" and said all he lacks is a producer.

Naima chose Martha and the Vandellas' "Dancing in the Street" which Naima correctly pointed out essentially became an anthem for the Civil Rights Movement. To add a bit of uniqueness, Naima said she was going to include some African dance moves during her performance. So dressed in a huge bell-bottomed pants that would be loose on an elephant, Naima belted out her song with passion and emotion fitting the song's message...she even got a plug in for her home town of Milwaukee. And then she started her African dancing and was accompanied by a couple of African drum players. It was definitely Naima's best performance on the season...Steven said it was "e-to-the-z-ooh twiddly dee"; then he called her the total package. J-Lo said she had her first goosebumps of the night.

Rounding out what has to this point been a great evening of performances, the resident rocker, James, took to the stage to interpret Stevie Wonder's "Living for the City". As James made his way around the stage and down one of the sides, he entertained with a few Motown-inspired moves and then it was back to the main stage and what has become a given--a big James finish in the vein of Adam Lambert. The crowd absolutely LOVED the performance and wouldn't stop hootin' and hollerin' long enough to allow J-Lo to speak. When she finally got the chance, she said James made her "speechless". Randy was a little harder on him and noted that it took the high notes to get James going. Steven said sometimes it takes "a little crazy" to make it happen...oh snap!

With the sounds of the Motor City still coursing through our collective veins, it's time to predict tomorrow's B3...which isn't going to be easy considering everyone was money tonight. But it's my job to predict, so here goes. The B3 will be made up of Lauren, Stefano, and Hailey (unfortunately for her). And the Idol going home will be...Hailey.

Watch tomorrow to see how your Idols did when all of the votes were tallied. Until then, I will continue watching TV so you don't have to...

Idol Chatter - One Get's the Boot

While you were out watching your NCAA bracket go down in flames and drowning your sorrows in green beer and corned beef sandwiches, I was spending 60 minutes of my life that I will never get back watching the Idols suffer through another elimination night. So what happened, you ask...read on and find out who toed the Idol stage for the final time.

Providing the entertainment this evening in between pleas for donations to help the victims of the Japanese earthquakes and tsunamis, an Idol group sing, and all that makes up an elimination night were the Black Eyed Peas and the reigning Idol champ, Lee DeWyze.

Group sing update: the Idols did a clever little mix to kick off the show...the Boys sang "Born to be Wild" and the Girls chipped in with "Born this Way". Get it? This week's theme was songs from the year the Idols were born and those songs have the word "born" in them. THAT JUST HAPPENED!

St. Patty's Day update...When Kieran dimmed the lights, he added a day-appropriate them complete with Irish music! Good times...

Slight detour complete, Ryan asked Casey, Jacob, and Lauren to center stage before sending all three back to the couch--they're safe for at least another week.

The next duo invited to join Ryan on stage were Hailey and Paul...and one of them is in trouble...and that one is Hailey who was shown to the danger stools.

While the rest of the Idols wondered whether they were safe or not, Ryan welcomed Lee DeWyze to the Idol stage where he sang his soon to be released single. What Lee lacks in personality and flair, he more than makes up with a radio-ready voice. I don't think Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, or Chris Daughtry need to worry about Lee knocking them off the record books for albums sold, but Lee still sounds good and should have a nice career as an artist--quite a different path than he was on a little over a year ago when he was selling paint in suburban Chicago.

Back to the elimination process and three more Idols took the long walk to center stage. This time it was Scotty, James, and Pia. Ryan spent a few minutes joking with Scotty before telling him he is safe. Then he turned his attention to Pia...who was also safe. That left James to square off with Ryan and go through the drill. While Ryan read from his cue cards, James looked worried...but he needn't because like the two before him, James was safe.

Still looking for a couple of Idols to fill out the B3, Ryan asked Stefano and Naima to join him. Ryan asked Stefano what he needs to do to connect with the audience. Stefano said he is going to make better eye contact to which J-Lo implored him to "sing to me!"...that's not going to make audience member and J-Lo hubby, Marc Anthony happy. But you know who is happy? That would be Stefano because he's safe; the same can't be said about Naima who was the second member of the B3.

The final two Idols to learn where they are going to watch the rest of the show were Karen and Thia. After spending a few minutes dissecting Karen's issues, Thia had her turn to defend her song choice from last night and the rest of the season...and she may need to do more defending because she is safe meaning Karen is the final B3 tonight.

To help take the B3's mind off the fact that they may be done as far as their Idol career is concerned, the Black Eyed Peas took to the stage to sing a little ditty that was dedicated to their friends in Japan.

With precious minutes left in the broadcast, the B3 stood next to Ryan (made him look even smaller than normal) and learned that Naima is safe for another week--I think everyone in the auditorium was shocked...I know Naima was! That left Karen and Hailey...and Karen was the unlucky one to be told she received the fewest votes. That means she has one last chance to sway the judges and get them to use their one and only save and keep Karen in the contest. My guess is they aren't going to use it and Karen is going to be sent home.

And as if the judges are reading my mind (or my blog), Randy dealt the cruelest cut of all and told Karen she isn't going to be singing for your votes anymore...he did say the decision wasn't unanimous so one of the judges lobbied to have the bi-lingual lovely stick around for another week.

Turn in next Wednesday when the remaining 11 Idols sing for your votes and a shot at immortality. Until then, I will continue watching TV so you don't have to...

Idol Worship - The Top 12 Sing Songs from their Birth Year

Before starting the show proper tonight, the Idol judges and Ryan made a plea with the viewing public to buy the downloads of tonight's show to donate money to the Red Cross and to benefit the victims of the terrible earthquakes and tsunamis from last week. So if you haven't donated already, here's your chance to help some people half-way around the globe, get a tax deduction in the good old U.S. of A., and enjoy some music as performed by your Idols!

The theme for the show is songs from the year the Idols were born.

Up first, Naima who entered the world in 1984. For her song choice, she went with the Tina Turner anthem that asks the musical question: "What's Love Got to Do With It?" Naima started the song perched upon the Idol staircase and quickly gyrated her way on to the stage where she worked both sides of the audience. I wasn't too into the song--I thought it was a bit tired. Steven disagreed with me, but Jennifer was in my corner (as was Randy) who pointed out that she was all over the note, but never really on it. Could be looking at a reservation on the danger stools come vote tallying time tomorrow night. We'll just have to wait and see...

While you ponder Naima's fate, the quirky one was up next...Paul (also born in 1984) chose to put his unique take on Elton John's "I Guess That's Why They Call it the Blues". In what is becoming his signature move, Paul greeted the Idol audience, implored them to "come on, baby", and wandered around the stage like a drunken sailor all while entertaining the judges enough that J-Lo was spotted lipsynching along with him. As the song ended, Paul seemed to have trouble finishing, but he was able to thank the audience and then chatted with J-Lo who sympathized with him for battling a cold and causing him to miss some notes. Randy wasn't as gracious as Jennifer, but did give Paul credit for making the song his own, but Steven had the best line saying Paul resembled a "loose dude in a loose mood".

As Randy asked for clarification on Steven's turn of a phrase, we got to learn a little about Thia (1995)--she wrote her first song at age 6 and truly believes she will sing for the rest of her life. Her song choice was "Color of the Winds" by Vanessa Williams. Joined by a string quartet and a classical guitar player on stage, Thia started flawless in her interpretation of the Oscar winning song from the animated feature, Pocahontas. But the judges had other thoughts. Randy felt it was boring and made him feel like he was at a pageant--sounds familiar...from the past 9 seasons when Simon sat in the third seat. The other judges piled on and asked her to mix up her song styling a bit more.

So with the sting of the judges comments still fresh on every one's mind, our attention turned to the Idol resident rocker, James Durbin, who was born in 1989 and picked "I'll Be There for You" by Bon Jovi. From the first note, James had the audience rocking with him and he did his best Chris Daughtry/Bo Bice walking the mic stand around the stage and then sidling up next to the guitar player who was on stage with him, and finally made his way to the judges table and gave them and the nearby audience a little up close and personal performance. James knows how to rock it, but I thought he sounded a bit off tonight. Steven cautioned him to not get "too poppy on me"...to which James told him he was saving the Aerosmith tunes for the finale...and then he and Steven agreed that Steven would join him on stage if in fact he made it to the finals. Randy interrupted his critique to ask James about some custom studded bandannas wrapped around his boots. And before giving out James' numbers, Ryan confirmed that Steven committed to singing on the Idol stage before the season ends. I guess the show has officially started!

Trying to keep the good vibes rolling, Hailey (1990) hit the stage to sing Whitney Houston's "I'm Your Baby Tonight"...which immediately lead me to question why? Is that really the best song from 1990? Whether it was the best song or not, Hailey put her patented "growl" and "kittenish" play on it. The judges, particularly Randy, seemed to really enjoy Hailey's outfit--red silk shirt on top of skin tight black pants...unfortunately her red lipstick ended up moving to her chin--oops! Ryan must be reading my blog because he stepped in to clean her up. Hair and make up over, Randy was back in judging mode and questioned Hailey's song choice...tonight and every other night--she's done Whitney, Alicia Keys, country...a real mixed bag. But what did you think? That's what really matters.

With Hailey fixing her lipstick, Stefano (1989) was the next Idol to sift through the hits from his birth year including songs by Milli Vanilli, New Kids on the Block, and Tone Loc. At long last, Stefano went with Simply Red's cover of the Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes classic, "If you Don't Know Me by Now"--which just happens to be one of the first CDs in my collection which started in 1989 when my brother bought me my first CD (a Sony Disc man for my 25th birthday). But enough about me (is there such a thing?!)...and back to Stefano who put all of his emotion into the song and getting his number 1 fan, J-Lo, to sing along with him. He was doing well until the end when he fell off the final note, but the crowd and judges didn't seem to mind. Randy started his praise by reading and regurgitating my blog knowledge about Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes (including the awesome Teddy Pendergrass on lead vocals). When he was done stealing my stuff, Randy said Stefano's was the performance of the night.

Now that the bar has been set, it was time for Pia to scan the songs from 1988 and came up with yet another Whitney Houston song, "Where Do Broken Hearts Go?". Dressed in a white off the shoulder jumper, Pia started slow, but hit her stride a few bars into the song which was the signal for the audience on either side of the stage to stand, do their clapping thing, and encourage Pia to deliver a very strong performance. Steven loved the way she modernized an older song, J-Lo was excited that Pia finally picked an up-tempo song, and Randy said that "Pia is in this to win it!" But he stopped short of taking away the "song of the night" award he handed out to Stefamo one performance before.

So we have had rock, pop, and R&B, the only thing missing is some country...but wait no longer because Scotty (1993) was up next and he decided to sing Travis Tritt's "Can I Trust You With My Heart". I love me some good country music and Scotty knows how to deliver it...I'm just waiting for the time when he shows up on stage with a 10-gallon cowboy hat--now that would complete the package. The crowd was all jacked up over his performance and the judges seemed to really enjoy the song and Scotty's growth on the show.

The third Idol of the night born in 1989 was Karen who chose Taylor Dayne's hit, "Love Will Lead You Back". While we waited for Karen to sing, we were treated to a wonderful segment about how Karen is her mother's "best prize, her Oscar"--it was a very moving piece. But that's isn't going to help Karen hit the notes and win the votes, she'll have to do that on her own. The first thing I noticed when Karen took the stage was her hair which was in a HUGE bun and her outfit which looked like a metallic suit that looked like it came from the Star Trek wardrobe department. Back to the singing...she did a decent job and even infused a little of her native Spanish toward the end. The judges were happy that she is back on the right path, but still are concerned that she isn't hitting all the right notes.

It was up to Casey to get us back on the right track. Casey was born in 1991 to "older" parents who had a lot of fun kidding around on camera. As they continued to goof around, Casey told us he was going to sing the first Nirvana song on the Idol stage EVER..."Smells Like Teen Spirit". Casey took to the stage playing an electric bass which got Randy's head bobbin'...and when he hit the chorus, Casey got the rest of the audience groovin'. Aside from a slightly awkward finish, Casey did the deed although J-Lo thought it got a little out of control, but still called him "sexy" which totally made his night for the second week in a row. Randy used a different adjective, "fearless", but it had a similar impact on the talented Idol.

An ailing Lauren (1994) was next and chose "I'm the Only One" by Melissa Etheridge. Lauren gave it the old college try, but her voice just didn't have it tonight--that's what the flu will do to a singer. Oh well, the audience enjoyed it and the judges provided some good feedback. J-Lo went so far as to credit her for "making it your own" and Randy and Steven encouraged her to stay sick.

Closing out the night's performances was Jacob who was born in 1987. Before telling us that his song selection ("Alone" by Heart), Jacob's mother tried to take credit for Jacob's singing chops. If her Idol audition was any indication, Jacob was adopted!:) Back to the stage where Jacob was trying to recreate the electricity that sparked many seasons ago when Carrie Underwood turned this song into her Idol calling. For the most part Jacob successfully fused his gospel and R&B vocals with the pure Rock song and delivered a real winner. Randy credited Jacob for going outside his comfort zone, getting back on pitch after losing it for a couple of bars, and said (for the second time tonight) that he is "in it to win it". Steven said that "Gospel had a baby and named it Jacob Lusk". Love that Steven Tyler, he's always good for a couple of good one's throughout the show.

Game On!

And with 12 Idol performances in the can, it's time to vote and figure out who's going home tomorrow. In my B3 are Naima (sub par performance), Hailey (looked good, but struggling with her identity), and Karen (just doesn't seem comfortable on stage). Going home will be Naima...going first hurt her, but an off performance sunk her.

Tune in tomorrow to see how your Idols fare when the votes are counted. Until then...I will continue watching TV so you don't have to...

Idol Chatter - Who Will Be the First to Go?

A little more than 24 hours after singing in front of millions of TV viewers, one of our 13 Idol finalists is going to be booted from the show. In the span of 60 minutes of mostly TV filler, one Idol's dreams will be dashed and then we'll be down to an even 12 Idols trying to become the 10th American Idol in the history of the world! Are you ready to spend the next hour with Ryan, Randy, J-Lo, Steven, and the special guests (Diddy-whatever, Adam Lambert)? Well, as usual, you don't have to because I'm giving you the night off...that's right, I'm watching TV so you don't have to...

So here's how the first Elimination night went...

Usual lame banter between Ryan and the judges; the re-unveiling of the Idols to the howls of the studio audience; a look behind the scenes at the Idol mansion; and, of course, the dreaded Idol group sing...this time brought to you by by music of Michael Jackson and some pretty awkward dance moves. The Michael Medley included "Gotta Be Startin' Something", "Rock with You", "Black or White", "Man in the Mirror". Normally I'm not a fan of the group sing, but I must admit these Idols (minus Casey who is in the hospital sick!), were actually pretty good! Well color me surprised!

First star in the audience sighting...Amanda Seyfried, star of the to be released "Red Riding Hood", was interviewed by Ryan and then we were treated to a video recap of the Idols attending a Red Carpet event at the movie's premier.

At the 18 minute mark, Ryan asked to have the lights dimmed and then invited Jacob, Stefano, and Karen to center stage to learn their fate--safe or in the bottom three? That was and will continue to be the question...in case you are confused about what an elimination night is all about.

After Ryan ran through last night's judges comments and got thoughts from the Idols on the spot, he sent Jacob and Stefano to the safety couch and Karen to those danger stools--so named because it looks like they are going to tip over when an Idol sits on one.

With the other 9 Idols plus Casey still wondering how they did capturing votes from last night, Ryan welcomed an old friend to the stage...Adam Lambert. On first glance it looked like a young Elvis had risen from the grave, but the multiple piercings confirmed that it was in fact Adam and not Elvis...

Old Idol gave way to current Idols when Lauren, Ashton, and Hailey were ushered to center stage to go through the psychoanalysis that Sigmung Seacrest practices...but before Ryan could get past Lauren who was starting to break down, he sent her back to the couch leaving Ashton and Hailey to run the traps of the elimination process. And then the strangest thing happened...Ryan sent both girls to the stools meaning the rest of the Idols, including convalescing Casey, are safe. Very odd indeed.

While Karen, Ashton, and Hailey awaited their fate--who would be the one with the lowest vote total, would the judges use their judge's save on the first elimination night, or would their Idol dreams die so quickly after it was born? So many questions and all that stands between them and their future on the Idol stage is some dude named Diddy Dirty something or other...will this guy ever settle on one name? He was born Sean John and at various time went by P. Diddy, Puff Daddy, J-Lo's boy toy...oops! That's a little awkward!

At long last and 54 minutes after the show started, Ryan went through the drill...first sending Karen to safety and then dropping the bomb telling Ashton that she is going home (or as Diddy just said she's "Coming Home") unless she can convince the judges that they need to save her thereby sealing the fate of every Idol for the rest of the season who get the fewest votes.

To try to convince the judges that she deserves to stay at least another week, she sang the same song that landed her in the B3 and on the brink of elimination, the little known Diana Ross song...and upon finishing her song, she sobbed while the judges deliberated, and then told Ashton that her Idol journey ends tonight.

And so goes the first elimination night of Season 10. We're down to 12 Idol finalists. Tune in next Tuesday to see what songs the Idols sing and to vote for your favorites to continue their quest to become the American Idol.

Until then, I will continue watching TV so you don't have to...

The Bakers Dozen Sing for Your Votes

It's the official opening night on Idol and tonight the Idols chose to sing songs from their personal idols. Here's what happened when the Idols took to the stage.

Lauren lead off the night's festivities and chose "Any Man of Mine" by Country Diva, Shania Twain. If memory serves correctly, the last Idol to sing this song was Mandisa from a few seasons ago...and we all know how that ended (with her elimination). If the judges comments are any indication, Lauren may well be packing her bags and on her way back to Georgia.

So we're off to a rough start and it's up to the musical genius of Casey to get us back on the rails. Casey took inspiration from and chose to channel the original Mad Dog, Joe Cocker, and sing "With a Little Help from my Friends". The song started a little pedestrian with Casey seated on the Idol staircase at the back of the stage, but as the song began to build, Casey was joined on stage by a few friends (a dozen or so) which propelled him to what was arguably the biggest performance of the night...does it matter if there have only been two performers? The judges enjoyed it and gave him mad props for a job well done...Steven called him a "rainbow of talent" and a "plethora of passion"...upon hearing such comments, Randy called time out to consult a dictionary.

With Season 10 officially underway, Ashton took the stage to do her best Diana Ross impression complete with the floor-length, form-fitting silver dress and matching hoop earrings. Of all the great Diana Ross songs, Ashton selected "When You Tell Me that You Love Me"...not exactly the most well-known song from the D-Ross catalogue. The judges felt it was a safe selection and equally safe performance. I didn't think there was anything special, but she should be safe come tomorrow night's elimination show.

The quirky one with the 1,000 watt smile, Paul, was up next and said his Idol is Ryan Adams (with an "R") and the type of artist he wants to become. For his performance, Paul picked "Come Pick Me Up"...a song I don't believe I have heard before and if I have, I'm sure it didn't sound like Paul sang it (for the record, J-Lo hadn't heard of the song either). The judges were fans of the performance and gave Paul some good feedback...and implored the voters to "get it". While giving out the number to vote for Paul, he and Ryan (Seacrest) had a bit of fun dancing around the stage like Paul--if you haven't seen his moves, I'm sure you can find them on YouTube...they're like none other.

Pia selected "All By Myself" by her idol, Celine Dion...never mind that it's an Eric Carmen song (oops! did I just show my age?!). No matter, Pia has it all and made quick work of the audience, the judges, and no doubt the voters. My only question: what was the cape looking thing hanging off the back of her tight, silver lame mini dress? When it came time for the judges to chip in, J-Lo had tears in her eyes and was rendered speechless, Randy gave her huge props, and Steven wished her "Happy International Woman Day". Pia's in for the long haul.

Following Pia was the resident Rocker, James, who told us that his idol is Paul McCartney...the guy who played with a little quartet called the Beatles (you may have heard of them). James chose Paul's "Maybe I'm Amazed". During the early part of the song I was pretty sure that we were listening to the second coming of former Idol finalist, Adam Lambert. As he started to hit his stride it would have been easy to get all Rock Star on us, but instead James went balladeer and showed great restraint. The judges gave him great praise and the audience punctuated their every word with hoots, hollers, and cheers.

So how will Hailey do when she covers the LeAnn Rimes classic "Blue"? Dressed in a dark blue dress and earrings down to here, Hailey yodeled and hulaed her way through the song to the delight of fans in the Kodak theatre. As he was providing his critique, Steven dropped in a little know fact about this song--it was originally written for Patsy Cline, but she never recorded it...who knew. For the most part the judges liked Hailey's performance, but when it came to Randy, he channeled his inner Simon and said he was a bit bored and found it a bit sleepy..straight out of the Book of Cowell.

Jacob, the Idol with the Golden Voice of God, surprised me by saying his musical idol is R. Kelly--I just hope he doesn't idolize R's extracurricular activities. For his song, Jacob went with the only R. Kelly song that I know, "I Believe I Can Fly" and with clouds superimposed on the screen behind him, Jacob was joined on stage by the same "friends" that helped Casey--the only difference were the blue robes they wore which added to the Gospel sound. The judges essentially refused to provide critiques and instead opted to praise him and tell him how great he was...until Randy who chose a new way to say he was a bit pitchy (dawg!). But it doesn't matter what the judges say, Jacob is a star!

Taking on the King of Pop is this Season's teen phenom, Thia, who sang "Smile"...a Charlie Chaplin classic that has been covered by a number of other singers before Michael recorded it, but it's still a great song and Thia has a great voice. About halfway through the song, Thia and the band got a little jiggy with it and picked up the tempo which lead to some awkward bouncing by Thia as she sang. The judges were torn on the performance preferring the first part of the song vs. the latter half.

Stefano, one of the three wild cards (along with Ashton and Naima), chose to sing "Lately" by Stevie Wonder. When I heard he was going to do a Stevie song, I didn't hold out much hope because Stefano doesn't have the strongest voice in the pack...but I have to give it up to him because when he hit the chorus, he had the crowd going and the judges just ate it up.

Karen said her idol was Selena, the Tejano singer from Lake Jackson, TX who was played by J-Lo in the movie version of her tragically short life. Karen chose to pay homage to Selena by singing "I Could Fall in Love". The judges didn't feel it tonight from one of the stronger singers in the Finals. Randy pulled the "sleepy" comment from earlier in the show.

With that sub par performance out of the way, it was time for the lone Country crooner, Scotty. Scotty went with Garth Brooks' "The River". Scotty started out OK, but when the music and background singers kicked in, his normally powerful deep voice got drowned out...fortunately he was able to restore order and get his mojo back on and finish strong. The judges provided very positive feedback, Randy said he could put the song out today and J-Lo said she finally saw a performer in the Country Boy (my words).

Putting the proverbial cherry on top of a Idol sundae was Naima who sang Rhianna's "Umbrella". When the song started, Naima showed off some of her breakin' moves and half-way through the song she go all African Dance on the crowd...as the song was wrapping, she laid a final set of dance moves on the viewers. The judges loved the performance in spite of some obvious pitch problems...except for Randy who said pitch is important, but loved the Reggae portion of the song (the part when she made her African steps).

So night one of the Idol Finals are in the bag and it's up to the voters to determine who is going to make it to next week and which Idol is going to come in unlucky number 13 for Season 10.

As usual, I have my bottom three which will be Lauren (wrong song), Paul (not sure the voters will "get" him), and Stefano (the judges put him in the finals--not the voters). And going home will be Lauren...

Don't forget to tune in tomorrow to see who was saved by your votes and whose Idol run is cut prematurely. Until then, I will continue watching TV so you don't have to...

Your Idol Finalists

Are you ready to meet your Idol finalists? Well, ready or not, here they come...but before we dive into the 13 Idol wannabes who will vie for your votes, let's talk about the NEW American Idol.

Gone from the judges panel are Simon Cowell, Kara DioGuari, and Ellen DeGeneres. In their place the Idol producers installed Aerosmith frontman, Steven Tyler, and entertainment triple threat, Jennifer Lopez. Moving over to the chair left empty by Simon's departure is Idol vet, Randy Jackson.

Now for the Idol finalists...

As noted previously, there are 13 finalists for the second time in Idol history. This year the voting public had but one opportunity to cast votes for their favorites and that was last week when the Top 24 Idols sang, received judges comments, and then were either voted into the Final 10 Boys/Girls (five of each) or put into a holding pattern in hopes of singing one last time for the judges with the hope of being selected a judge's wild card--a fate bestowed upon three of the Idols.

Confused yet? Well, forget about how we got here, just be glad tonight the Idols sing for your votes and only one will be booted during tomorrow's elimination night. Here are the Idols who will sing for the opportunity to be crowned the 10th Idol in history.

The 10 Idols voted into the finals by your votes are:
  • Scotty McCreery - the lone Country Crooner of the Idol bunch
  • Thia Megia - a 15-year-old phenom with a voice that belies her age
  • Karen Rodriguez - a Latina lovely who captured the hearts of the Idol judges
  • Pia Toscano - a Superstar songstress in the making who IS the total package
  • Paul McDonald - a bit quirky, but not one to overlook
  • Casey Abrams - a magical musician who can play, sing, and entertain like a proven professional
  • Hailey Reinhardt - a talented, but inconsistent performer
  • James Durbin - this year's Idol Rocker...combines Adam Lambert-like screams with controlled passion
  • Jacob Lusk - an emotional singer who sings with the Golden voice of God
  • Lauren Alaina - young, big voice, and plays to Steven Tyler

The three wild cards selected by the Idol judges:

  • Ashton Jones - a Dynamo diva in the making...could be the second coming of Diana Ross
  • Stefano Langone - a near-death motorcycle accident and a sweet voice won over J-Lo
  • Naima Adedapo - sings with passion and the desire for a better life (she is a maintenance worker who was shown cleaning toilets in her intro package)

Tune in tonight to watch this talented group of singers as they sing with the hope of becoming the next great pop star.

Until then, I will continue watching TV so you don't have to...
